Practicum 5- Krista

So today in Second Life, I pretty much did the same thing I always do. I just jumped around to
different places to explore and chat. In my presentation I talked about how my avatar was pretty normal looking. When I first started, I made my avatar look as attractive as possible, because I thought well why not make your avatar the best looking possible. I mean its impossible to be perfect in real life, but if you can make your avatar perfect, then why not? This is a common thing I've noticed in Second Life. I don't think I am the only one who made my avatar this way. Looking around in Second Life, most other avatars are really tall and attractive. So I wanted to do a little experiment, and I changed my avatar to be the most abnormal looking, according to normal standards. Here is what my avatar looked like after...

I was expecting some sort of reaction to my new appearance, but i don't think anyone really cared because people were still chatting with me. I even asked one guy what he thought and he just said I looked cool. So I don't think anyone would ever straight up tell me I looked ugly, they just kind of ignored me. The coolest thing about going on Second Life today was that randomly some guy was like go TCU!....so naturally I was like go Wisconsin!, and then everyone else was like what are you talking about? So we had to explain about the Rose Bowl. Anyways I thought that was super cool because of all the people that go on Second Life one of them just happened to mention the Rose Bowl. Go Wisconsin!

  1. This was a cool experiment to try out, kinda surprising that no one said anything about it. Your avatar is pretty strange looking. That is really cool that the rosebowl was brought up! Go Badgers!

  2. That's so weird! Did you find out if he went to TCU or was just a fan? That's really interesting that you made your avatar different form the normal population of Second Life. The general assumption about virtual worlds is that you can make yourself look like anyone or anything, therefore I would assume that most people would like make themselves more attractive then they perceive themselves.
