Reaction: History of the Internet

After the animation had ceased and my attention had been finally wrenched away from all of the mesmerizing little moving black lines, a few impressions had stuck with me. Of course, I had primarily thought of war. It was of no great surprise to me how much war contributes to every day useful technologies that save hundreds of thousands of lives such as penicillin and peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. Would this technology have been developed in peace time? Was war simply a catalyst for the inevitable, or would the technology had become something completely different? The concept of War as a neutral, not good nor evil, manifestation of human agency I find interesting.

One awesome thing that the cold war did not produce which disappoints me: Space Lasers. Where exactly are my space lasers?
