MySpace: Creativity at its finest
MySpace has a bad reputation as being a forum for sketchy men to creep on promiscuous teenage girls. While my 30 minutes spent browsing 15 MySpace profiles did reinforced this perception, I also discovered a newfound appreciation for this social media outlet. MySpace gives people the ability to express themselves. I was impressed by the artistic skills and creative talent of the few profiles I viewed, and realized that without a tool like MySpace, would these people be expressing themselves artistically in this way? It's really hard to say, but my first impression is no. None of them mention art, web design or photography as hobbies or interests, and yet they all seem to dedicate a significant amount of time to the maintenance of their MySpace profiles. Driven by a desire to network with actual and virtual friends, MySpace users put themselves and their digital artwork out there for the world to see, and this is a noteworthy form of expression in the new media world.
