Response to History of the Internet

The History of the Internet video was a great summary of everything we covered in lecture last week. Crazy that an entire 50 year history of the internet can fit into an 8 minute video, right?
A few thoughts on the history of the internet itself:
  • We have come ridiculously far from 1957. Can you imagine if we only used the internet nowadays for scientific/military purposes? Since I've never used the Internet for either of these purposes, it's hard for me to even comprehend this.
  • It seems like the first wave of Internet computers was so ineffective - can only be stored in cool rooms, can't work directly on them, specialists have to be called in to fix them? The Internet was supposed to make things easier, not harder. It just sounds like a hassle to try and connect to the net back in the day.
And a few thoughts on the video...
  • Every time the narrator said "DARPA" I felt like I was watching one of the Dharma Initiative video tapes from "LOST" telling me which station I will be working in and how often I should press the button.
  • Moved so fast! I would have to watch it a few more times if I even wanted to begin to write anything down (not that I would, once is enough).
Overall, this video just summed up everything I learned in lecture last week. The visuals helped to solidify anything that I was still fuzzy on.
