Practicum #3: Questions

I'm presenting with Ben Steffes on forms of collective intelligence. My questions for the class are:
1) Have you ever added new information or made edits to a page on a "wiki" site, like Wikia or Wikipedia, or do you just look at the information other people have already posted?
2) What gives people the incentive to actively engage in a collective intelligence site vs. being a passive consumer of information?

  1. To respond to the second question, I think people only like to comment when they think they have something helpful/unique/funny to say. Like I said in class, classmates at my high school used to edit out Wikipedia page just for kicks. Although these comments would later be deleted, a good portion of the student population got to see them before they were eliminated from the page. Editing this information can make people feel useful, like they really are contributing to the good of society (even if it is just a joke, like in my case).
